Demographically, black children and youth represent 31% of the mentees served by our regional agency. We cannot stress enough the importance that youth have a positive adult mentor in their life, not just now, but always. Now, we do believe that our Bigs with Badges program will continue to present opportunities to repair damage, stereotypes and relationships between badge-wearing authority figures and black youth in our community, but we know there is a long road ahead. We acknowledge that there is still widespread injustice and we commit to continuing our recruitment efforts for that program. Please watch this very passionate and emotional message from Kara Wood.

Today we wanted to shine a light on an incredible non-profit organization called the Literacy Initiative.

Literacy Initiative's goal is for students to build a healthy mind, body, and spirit through programs that mentor, engage in sports, and support reading. Since 2017, the organization has been able to provide over 30,000 books and mentor over 15,000 low-income students through their normal after-school programs.

This summer the Literacy Initiative has created a FREE virtual camp that students can participate in! The programs are sectioned off under five main categories: STEM, The Arts, Let's Get Moving, Reading & Writing, and Influencer-Led.

Learn more about the Literacy Initiative programs and register your children for the virtual camp at Literacy-Initiative.org/eCamp

Since the middle of March, Big Brothers Big Sisters staff have been working completely from home in order to maintain safety and prevent the COVID-19 virus. Following both Indiana and Michigan’s recovery plans, we are slowly starting to transition things back to the way they were.

As of Monday, June 1, 2020, BBBS staff is slowly transitioning, as able, to work from the office. While in the office, all staff members must practice social distancing as much as possible.

Starting June 14, 2020, Bigs and Littles are approved to meet in person, with parent/guardian permission, and still maintain social distance.

Program functions, including Volunteer Interviews, Youth/Parent Interviews, and Mentor Trainings may take place in person beginning June 14, 2020, while maintaining social distance. If any party is uncomfortable meeting in person, the meetings may take place via video, web conference, or phone.

All match activities and agency events will start taking place soon, like our BBBS Annual Golf Outing
